Sound Matter.

The village of Goussainville is situated next to the runway of the Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport. The history of this site is very special, today it is a village deserted by its inhabitants. Only the ruins and a few stubborn people are left. It is a sensitive area that faces social, health, economical and environmental issues. However, we have looked at this site from a new angle.

How can this problem be turned into a resource, and how can we take another look at noise?

How can we materialise the noise and transform it into matter? And how can the air sound produce energy for the village?

This project proposes a unique approach to the sound environment by creating an experimental residence on the site itself: The Laboratory of the Air sound environment in Goussainville. We developed this project in close relations with sound professionals, researchers and the designers from the movement of Sound Making.

Our approach lies in the consciousness of a territory which is composed and comprehended not only by the aesthetic, but also by the other senses. For decades, light has played an important role in architecture design, but it is sure that sound can also participate and define a space. Thus, it becomes possible to «build» and draw architecture where the contextual sound character is preponderant.

This reflection required many interviews and a close collaboration with the inhabitants of Goussainville, but also particularly with researchers and experts from many fields.
